Induction Evaluation Questions

Photography

Q. Did you use manual or auto focus? What have you learnt about the zoom and focus rings on the camera?

A. I used manual focus. I have learnt that nearly every time you zoom in with the zoom ring, the focus rings need readjusted, to keep the image in focus and not blurry.

Q. What did you learn about the T-Stance?

A. I learnt that it helps keep the camera steady, therefore keeping the image sharp.

Q. What did you learn about portrait and landscape mode?

A. I learnt that the portrait mode was more ideal for a magazine front cover, as the landscape would require resizing and cropping to fit in in the A4 image.

Q. Did you take your image landscape when it should have been portrait? What problems did this cause?

A. I did not take any landscape photographs but I could imagine that there would be many problems with it as it might cut of the side or top of heads f4rom the picture.

Q. Were your images in focus? What would you do to improve these?

A. They were in focus, i could maybe improve them by maybe changing the settings of the camera or spin the focus ring more.

Q. What did you learn about lighting? (three types: back, side, front - include example if necessary)

A. I learned that if the light is at the front it sometimes looks overexposed. I didn't actually take any pictures with the light from the back. My personal favourite was from the side as it gave a good contrast especially when I turned the picture black and white in photoshop.

Q. Were they well composed? Did you use rule of thirds? What were there problems with eye line (too low or too high)?

A. I didn't actually use rule of thirds and I think that the eye line was lower than the top line, but it didn't really cause many problems.

Q. Did you think carefully about the background you used for your images? Did this cause any problems?

A. As soon as I found out we got to choose our background, I knew I wanted a white background straight away, because then it would be easy to select around the head and delete it so I could put my own background in.

Q. How did you handle your subject? Do you need to develop your people skills so you can control your subjects better? Did your lack of people skills have an adverse effect on your image?

A. I asked him to pose in a certain way, after seeing a front cover of NME and deciding I liked the pose of Noel Gallagher. I think I had quite good people skills, although at times it became quite awkward as the poses were quite funny.

Photoshop

Q. What tools did you use on Photoshop?

A. Transform, lasso tool, magic wand tool, curves, hue/saturation, black and white, Text, ink drop, clone stamp tool, insert image tool, shape tool, gradient tool and laye fx to add a shadow to the text.

Q. What did you find difficult to use? Easy to use?

A. I found it all pretty easy to use, apa from the lasso tool to crop around his head as it took ages and the magic wand took, didn't do it correctly.

Q. Was the text well controlled?

A. Yes it was, it didn't make the image look overcrowded or too little.

Q. Did you add effects and drop shadows? Why? How did you do this?

A. I added drop shadow to all of the text so it didnt blend into the background and so the edges were definitive. I went to the fx button under the layers options, then clicked drop shadow, and then changed the direction of the shadow to what suited me.

Q. Did you download fonts? Why did you choose these fonts (TA?) how did you download them?

A. I didnt download any fonts as I felt I didnt need to, as the fonts I had did just fine. I used the thick sans serif font because I wanted the logo to look sophisticated like the NME logo. I used a handwritten style font for the main article as it looks more personal and tailord towards people who like these types of music.

Q. What colours did you use? Why?

A. I used blacks, greys, whites and golds. I used these as they looked more sophisticated. I have seen a special edition of NME with the same colours, and it looked very proffesional.

Q. What would you improve about your front cover?

A. I would add more articles to the right side and I would add page numbers underneath them. I would also add more catchy phrases, like "WOW!", "LOOK!" and "PLUS!"

Q. What were its strengths?

A. Modestly, I like the positioning of the logo, the head over the logo and the main article layound just over the face.
